Star Wars Scene 38: Obi Wan Kenobi Vs. Darth Vader, reimagined

My dad took us to see “A New Hope” at a drive-in movie theater in 1977; I was 5 years old. Since then, I have been a life-long Star Wars fan. For years and years, before the Disney acquisition, before the prequels, Star Wars fans would imagine and speculate the many places that these characters could go. Additions like “Rogue One” even went so far as to tell a story adjacent to the Skywalker Saga. It was “Rogue One” that gave us something that, as a Star Wars fan, I never considered or knew I wanted. The scene at the end with Vader hacking through a line of rebel fighters to get to Princess Leia’s ship has become one of the most iconic moments in the Star Wars cannon— and that was allegedly a scene that was added well after the shooting had ended. Seeing Vader slaying in his prime was pretty damn amazing…but when you consider the timeline, his vigor does not line up to his fight with Obi Wan Kenobi, which would happen shortly afterwards.

That’s where Scene 38 comes in. This is a project that I’ve had my eye on for nearly a year now. A group called FixItInPost on YouTube reshot the Kenobi/Vader fight from “A New Hope”— kooky idea, but the teaser footage looked really cool. It’s odd that it pop into my head yesterday, and figured I’d look into it to see if there had been any progress. Lo and behold, they launched the finished sequence a few days ago!

Much like the SpiceDiver edit of David Lynch’s “Dune,” I love it when fans go back and make an attempt to seamlessly add and improve things from their favorite films— hell, Lucas is the godfather of revisions! I thought these folks did a really slick job here— it’s a great sequence, lovingly blended in with the scenes from the original film. It’s 6+ minutes of your life that is well-spent, for a Star Wars fan!

Now, what I will REALLY be impressed with is when someone Deep Fakes an entire movie with an alternate cast— in the case of Star Wars, it would be interesting to see Kurt Russel as Han, or James Earl Jones an Anakin!

Get to it, internet!
