Well, this is a bit of a bummer. According to an exclusive report from Collider, Lucasfilm is putting future Star Wars spin-off films on hold, due to the poor box office performance of Solo: A Star Wars Story.

I have to say, I thought that the two "Star Wars Story" films have been the best of the crop that has been released in the last several years. If you've listened to José and me on our podcast Cinepod Moviecast, we were both underwhelmed (to say the VERY least) with The Last Jedi, and although José was a bit lukewarm with Solo: A Star Wars Story, I found it to be an absolute blast; as good as Rogue One (which we discussed briefly on our Dune episode)!

As reported, the Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi films are being put on hold for now, as well as any hopes for a sequel to Solo (which ends with the potential of a follow-up). For now, it looks as if they are moving forward with a new trilogy to be captained by Rian Johnson (Last Jedi), as well as a new series of films from David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the team that helms "Game of Thrones" for HBO (as long as this keeps them from their proposed "Confederate" series).

It's a shame that Lucasfilm was scared off by the low box office. I'm sure that Solo will find its audience when it is released for home consumption, which might give them the wherewithal to continue with the next few "Star Wars Story" pictures. However, I do understand the apprehension, but not from a box office standpoint. It seems as if they've been too quick to shovel out these Star Wars movies, so much so that they are not only crowding the market, but they don't seem to be taking the time they need to really develop these stories. Say what you will about the Lucas-directed films, they were well-thought out and planned over decades. Disney just seems to be rushing all of this content out, with very little development time.

Still...it'll be nice to get some new stories out there, as opposed to trying to rehash different perspectives on the old stuff. As someone that saw the original Star Wars in the theater in 1977 (I was 5 years old), I look forward to seeing new stories. It's a big galaxy...there's bound to be more interesting stories to tell.
